listening on repeat

I love music; it’s something that’s been in my life since day one.  Today, I thought I’d share some of the music I currently love (or are just simply stuck in my head), so you can maybe discover new sounds.  ❤

track one // “stone cold,” demi Lovato

” I was your amber, but now she’s your shade of gold “

When I first heard this, I could tell it was Demi; her voice felt familiar, yet there was something about it that set an entirely different mood than her other songs.  “Stone Cold” has so much power and emotion in it, and she sings it emphatically with soul.  I love the dynamic contrasts between the verses and the chorus, and how Demi changes technique to show the sudden, abrupt change.  All of this symbolizes the bumps and rises and falls in a relationship.  The lyrics are lovely as well, and though it is not a happy lovey-dovey song, what she is projecting is heartbreaking and beautiful.

track two // “WILD,” troye sivan ft. alessia cara

” We’re alike you and I, two blue hearts stuck in our wrong minds “

Two of my favorite artists have collaborated, and this reversion of Troye’s hit single WILD is even more enticing with Alessia Cara’s new lyrics and vocals.  This is one of his more happier songs, and one that pronounces of youth, living in the moment, and freely falling in love.  What I love about all of Troye’s songs are the lyrics, and how thought out and not-cheesy they are.  I always appreciate when an artist writes their own lyric, mainly because I usually find that they sing with much more compassion if its something they have a connection with.  And if you have never heard any songs on his album Blue Neighborhood, make sure to give it a listen.  It’s one of the few albums that I love all the songs on.  🙂

track three // “skinny love,” birdy

” Come on skinny love, what happened here? “

There’s many versions of Bon Iver’s Skinny Love, and Birdy’s is one of the loveliest.  Her voice goes from delicate to powerful with conviction, and her expression and intonation is alluring to listen to.  I love the piano accompaniment as well, and it complements her voice and style.  The message being presented in this song is heart shattering, too; Birdy delivers it beautifully.

track four // “we don’t talk anymore,” charlie puth ft. selena gomez

” We don’t talk any more like we use to do “

This is the type of a song that is awfully catchy and has been stuck in my head for several weeks, and it just won’t get out.  😂  So, yeah, it just didn’t feel right not putting this onto the playlist.  Also, Charlie is adorable.

track five // “take me home,” pentatonix

” We, we light up the sky, heaven knows there’s no such thing as goodbye “

I feel like Pentatonix gets a lot of attention for their covers, but what about their originals?  They’re like hidden gems that no one knows about.  Take Me Home is more of a nostalgic, slower song that is impeccably arranged.  All of the members of the group are phenomenal and beyond talented, but what sets them apart from good and great is their blend.  Their music and harmonies are absolutely seamless.  The balance in their sound is so appealing, and when you pair that with breathtaking lyrics, you get something you’ll never forget.

track six // “kiss the rain,” yiruma

Yiruma is a famous South Korean pianist and composer, and though his most acclaimed work is River Flows in You, I love Kiss the Rain.  It’s so beautiful and delicate and has a depth that modern pop-y music doesn’t have.  The melody is so soothing to listen to, and the contrast between the lower register and higher notes (Yiruma’s signature) is just so darn entrancing.   It’s one of those songs you listen to when you want to put life back into perspective.  As a piano player, I plan on mastering this piece.

track seven // “guns and ships,” hamilton

” I come back with more guns, and ships, and so the balance shifts “

I wished I can say that I’m a huge Hammy-McHamilton fan, but I’m not.  I truly wished I was, since I love Broadway and history and rap that is enunciated so I can actually understand what they’re saying.  I do enjoy the soundtrack very much, though; it’s the kind of music I listen to when I get ready in the morning.  My favorite song from both acts is “Who Lives, Who Dies, Who Tells Your Story,” but “Guns and Ships” just hypes me up for the day.  And I’m totally part of the shout chorus who screams “LAFAYETTE” and “HAMILTION.”  Honestly, Lafayette and Hamilton are the best Broadway bromance ever.
